As a church that promotes social justice, we believe everyone deserves equal rights, opportunities, and treatment regardless of race, economic status, sexuality, or gender identity. It is based on the idea that God cares about how people are treated and has given us the responsibility to uphold justice. Micah 6:8 says, “Do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with God.” This verse encourages people to act when there is injustice. Christians are drawn toward service, providing resources, food, clothing, and help to find shelter for those in need. Beyond the provision of this immediate need is a deeper drive to address the systemic inequities that result in some needing food, clothing, and shelter. Giving food to the poor is an issue of charity; asking why the poor have no food is an issue of justice.
The Social Justice Advocacy is rebranding and is excited to have new members share their ideas and guide the future of this committee. We have previously addressed earth care, racism, and disabilities. SHEEP also continues social justice work through the Food Insecurity and LGBTQ+ Advocacy initiatives.
This year’s key focus will be working with the Trustees to make our building more welcoming to ALL people. We will be looking at accessibility and showing our beliefs. As we explore improving accessibility at our church, we will be consulting resources provided by the UMC’s Disability Ministries Committee, which helps congregations welcome persons with disabilities for full participation in their ministries. Learn more in their pamphlet.
Future events for this committee include visits to historic sites, book studies, coffee/dessert chats and chews, movie discussions, and working in our native garden.
