Safe Sanctuaries is a set of decisive actions taken by a faith community to make a congregation a safe place for all, but specifically for our children, youth, seniors, vulnerable adults, staff, and volunteers. The goal is for these persons to be able to grow spiritually and to experience the abiding love of God in a Christian community of faith and through relationships with others. St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church (SMUMC) is committed to ensuring that all who are involved in church ministries can participate in an environment that is protected and secure. To that end, we have developed a Safe Sanctuaries Policy, which requires all staff members and volunteers to get background checks through SafeGatherings.com at the church’s expense and receive training on the laws pertaining to abuse and harassment.
The Safe Sanctuaries policy also addresses the possibility that someone who is on a registered sex offender list might want to worship at St. Matthew’s. There are times and places where such a person will not be able to participate in church life and events. However, SMUMC is committed to working with the best practices recommended so that a registered sex offender can receive support and worship here with us. We are a welcoming, inclusive, and forgiving congregation striving to live out our highest calling to live and love like Jesus.
