What it means to work at St. Matthew’s Disaster Response / Outreach HUB

  • To participate in small monthly groups that meet to make cards,
    assemble and/or verify UMCOR Kits.
We meet the first Monday of each month at 9:30 AM, break for lunch at noon and re-assemble till 3 PM. This group enjoys lively conversation, coffee breaks, great deserts and a lot of fun. Open to all ages and genders. A love for the “Washington Redskins” is recommended, but not held against your participation.
  • To participate in larger groups that meet when the call is made for
rapid response to Disasters.  We acquire materials, assemble and verify UMCOR Kits.
There are times when the need calls for large groups to mass together in response to major disasters. We set up assembly lines of items and work in groups to organize UMCOR Relief Kits.   They are then packaged, labeled and placed on our truck for transport to Mission Central, saving hundreds of dollars in shipping costs.
  • To participate in Local Area Collections.
One week prior to a scheduled trip to Mission Central we put out a call to recycle goods such as computer equipment, household items, medical supplies, furniture, clothing etc. We need volunteers to help pick up items using our truck or to help load items that are dropped at the church.
  • To participate in assembly of “Love Kits” which are used then in other Mission Central Ministries.
Items are donated that cannot be used in UMCOR kits. We separate these items and use then to make different kits that can be used in other Ministries such as “Warm Nights”.
  • To volunteer help with inventory and general maintenance of HUB
    stored items.
Once each quarter we gather to verify our inventory and general clean up our storage area. Enjoy fellowship and lively conversation.
