Seven volunteers from our St. Matthew's family (Rev. Ginger and husband Anthony, Chuck, Karen, Pattie, Roy and Pete) traveled up to Staten Island on Sunday night, Dec 2nd to help with relief efforts from Superstorm Sandy.
The work of preparing a home that has been flooded for eventual reconstruction is painfully slow and tedious. Our team worked on several homes in various stages of preparation for rebuilding.
The stages of preparation are: remove flood debris, remove all furniture and personal belongings, remove all appliances, remove all wall board and insulation, possibly remove all ceilings and insulation, remove all nails from the frame, clean up all paper and wall board debris, remove the flooring, power wash the inside of the home, and then you can disinfect the walls, frame and all other exposed parts.
Our team worked on four homes, doing some parts of the above list to each. The next crew will take each of these homes to the next level.
We sent a VIM team in March to St. Matthew's School in Logantown, Liberia. We went to help build a new clinic for the school and community, to provide training to the school teachers, to have opportunities to share God's love with the students through VBS and other activities, and to learn more about our brothers and sisters in Liberia. It was an amazing trip and no one came back unchanged.
On Sunday, October 2 we had a terrific group of people from 8 local churches gather together to spend a few hours walking to end hunger in our 2011 Bowie CROP Walk. We had a tremendous response to our request for donations to the Bowie Interfaith Food Pantry and were able to deliver over 100 bags of groceries! We even had a surprise visit from Ted Farrar, the District Regional Director from Church World Service!
Thanks to all of the walkers, sponsors and volunteers for another great year!
