Bowie State University (BSU) is Maryland’s oldest historically black university and one of the 10 oldest in the country. It was founded in 1865 as a teaching college in Baltimore, moving to Jericho Farm in 1908, long before Levitt built its first homes in Bowie. Located on 355 acres just north of the city, that small Normal School No. 3 is now a university with over 6000 students, over 1000 of whom live on campus. It offers 22 undergraduate majors, 19 Master’s programs, two Doctoral programs, and 14 certificate programs in such disciplines as computer science, education, human resource development, organizational communication, and nursing. As a public university, it is part of the University System of Maryland. Some students are homeless when they arrive at the university, and some are in need of assistance. Helping them is a new ministry at St. Matthew’s. It started in December 2017, with receipt of new refrigerators from Mission Central. We called BSU and learned they would be of great use to some of their students, and also learned about other student needs with which St. Matthew’s could help. Our efforts are intended to help meet student needs, and to invite them to attend St.Matthew’s worship services, and to participate in our classes, missions, and other church and community activities. The university manages the Dorothy Holland Emergency Fund to assist students addressing a major or critical emergency while studying at BSU. In December, St. Matthew’s provided dorm refrigerators, personal hygiene supplies, clothing, and a laptop computer, and donated $1700 to the Emergency Fund for bedding and needs.
