YOUTH GROUP will resume today from 6:30 – 8:15 p.m. for a New Year’s Party! Drinks, snacks and desserts will be provided. Come play games, share food and talk about what this new year could hold!
CONFIRMATION PARENT/GUARDIAN meeting Sunday, January 22, 12:00 p.m. Eighth graders (and those older who are not confirmed) and their parent(s) or guardians(s) are invited to join us in Fellowship Hall, for pizza and conversation about what Confirmation is and what our schedule will look like this year. Please bring your calendars with you and let Chelsea know if you plan to attend.
FAIR TRADE/SERRV SALES TODAY after each service in Fellowship Hall. Stop by today to pick up Fair Trade goodies and beautiful SERRV handicrafts, including many end-of-season bargains. All proceeds benefit St. Matthew’s mission projects.
THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE – Throughout January we will be focusing on where we see the light of God in one another, around St. Matthew’s and in the world. We will explore how God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things. On the orange piece of paper in your bulletin share where YOU saw the light of GOD this week, then place that slip in the offering plate during the offering. These slips will be displayed in the main hallway as we celebrate the many ways that God’s light is revealed to us!
REMINDER: The deadline for the February 2017 Circuit Rider will be Sunday, January 15, 2017.
Jesus and His Jewish Influences will begin NEXT Sunday, January 15, in Room 126 taught by Jim Wiedman. For anyone interested in understanding the profound effect Jesus had on the world, it’s important to realize that his actions and teachings didn’t emerge from a vacuum. Rather, they were the product of a fascinating dialogue with—and reaction to—the traditions, cultures and historical developments of ancient Jewish beliefs.
AMAZING GRACE, Movie Night for Adults – Saturday, January 21, 7:00 p.m. in Fellowship Hall, sponsored by the United Methodist Men (UMM). The film tells the story of how “one man led a movement that changed the world.” See how this man persuaded the moneyed and shipping interests in the British Parliament to abolish the slave trade, which led to the abolition of slavery throughout the British Empire. Attendance is free. Popcorn and drinks will be available for donations. Childcare will be available if needed. For more information and to register your children for childcare, contact Ray Denmark.
STEWARDSHIP UPDATE #1 – After our last St. Matthew’s alert, several church members have asked for an update on our annual pledge drive. Our team is pleased to report that 13 additional givers have answered the call generating $33,390 and bringing our pledge total to $496,620. This leaves us just $49,138 shy of our goal.
There is still time to get your pledge card in, so please consider making a financial commitment to St. Matthew’s; your pledge will help us do all the good we can! Pledge on line – at the home page of the church web site click on Generosity Gift Form 2017 under the Gift button, complete the form and click SUBMIT.
STEWARDSHIP UPDATE #2 – The “Thank You Brunch” originally scheduled for Saturday, January 21 has been cancelled. Through the responses we’ve received thus far, we’ve learned that this date conflicts with too many community and church events, and very few people would be able to attend. We will try to find a better time or way to show our appreciation. Stay tuned!
CONFERENCE LEADERSHIP DAY – Register now (ends January 31) at hhtp://www.bwcumc.org/events/leadershipdays/ for this two-part event planned to encourage, inspire and prepare you for a new year of ministry. The first session will be held on Saturday, February 11, from 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at either Good Shepherd UMC in Waldorf or Glen Burnie UMC. Classes will be for all ministry interests including various church committees, special ministries and community ministry. A full day workshop with Dr. Phil Maynard, author of “Membership to Discipleship” will be held on Saturday, March 4 from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Come as a team with your pastor to learn effective ways to “grow disciples,” not just church members.
