IMPORTANT BUILDING CLOSINGS
During the month of August the Trustees will be closing the church building to perform some much needed maintenance and other activities. During these closings they are asking that you DO NOT enter the building so that the workers can perform the necessary maintenance. Thank you for your patience and understanding. The schedule is as follows:
- Saturday, August 22, 2015 – Starting at 2:00 p.m. the Building will be CLOSED so that the carpets can be cleaned. The Building will reopen at 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 23.
- Saturday, August 29, 2015 – Starting at 6:00 a.m. the Building will be CLOSED so that all the floors can be cleaned and waxed. The Building will reopen at 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 30.
- Monday, August 31, 2015 – All Day – Building is Closed for all activities. City of Bowie will be doing maintenance and the water will be turned off in the building for a good part of the day.
Ministry Information Sharing – August 30 – 9:45 in Fellowship Hall. Parent/guardian of infants – Grade 5 are encouraged to share wishes and ideas for future children and family ministries at St. Matthew’s in the listening corner and meet other parents. Learn what’s happening in Sunday School for all ages. Come, help us partner with you in raising your children in the faith.
Fall classes begin September 13. Some adult options will be:
- Sunday 9:45 – The Call: The Life and Message of the Apostle Paul by Adam Hamilton
- Thursdays 9:15 a.m. Jesus in the Gospels led by Ray Denmark;
- Mondays at 9:15 or 7:00 p.m. That You May Believe: The Gospel of John led by Rick and Carol Miller. (see below for more information)
- More to come —–
The Gospel of John—Kerygma Mondays, Sept. 21–Dec.21
The fourth Gospel is a stand-alone. Matthew, Mark and Luke are called the “Synoptics” (with one eye) because they tend to see Jesus from the same point of view. But the youngest Gospel comes at the person and work of the Christ in a very different way. If you would like to understand the Scriptures because you read them for yourself, not because someone told you what they meant, then Kerygma is for you and the Gospel of John is a wonderful place to begin. No previous knowledge of the Bible is expected. Learn in teams around tables. Group times; 9:15-11:00 AM or 7:00 –9:00 PM. All adults—members or not—are welcome to join.
Blessings of the Backpacks and Back to School Party – Next Sunday
Everyone going back to school is invited to bring your back pack to either the 8:30 or 11:00 a.m. worship service on August 23 for the blessing of the backpacks. Children and their families are invited to the Back to School Party at 12:20 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. Make your own sandwich and back to school crafts. Meet other families and enjoy a treasure hunt for school supplies. All are welcome.
The Bowie Food Pantry distributed 100 backpacks last year to children Pre-K through Grade 12. The families bring in the supply lists from their children’s schools and backpacks are filled with needed supplies. The Pantry is now collecting supplies for this school year and a list of needed items is located on the bulletin board in the main hallway. Please place all school supplies in the shopping cart located in the coat room. Thank you. TODAY IS THE LAST DAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Free books – We are in the process of cleaning out the library (room 123) and have been going through books. Duplicates and outdated resources have been taken off the shelves and are in boxes in the coatroom through August 31, 2015. If you are interested in looking through them and taking any home, please help yourself!
How you can make the endowment make the greatest impact -Your Endowment Committee is looking to support church projects that will best further God’s Kingdom within St. Matthew’s and/or in the Bowie community and beyond. According to Isaiah 1:17, “…learn to do good; seek justice; correct oppression; defend the fatherless; plead for the widow.” We would like to hear from each of you about what projects you know or believe could make a difference. Up to $5,000 will be awarded by the Committee to one or more projects. Please send your suggestions by September 11, 2015 to Aubrey King or to Dan Blades or drop it off at the church office.
