About Us

Welcome to St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church! We hope you will join us to celebrate God’s presence in our midst. All are welcome. Connect with us in the worship of God, be a part of our supportive fellowship, and grow in your relationship with Jesus Christ. Our membership garden is filled with seeds from nearly every denomination and background. Joy is found in our growing together and finding peace in the Holy Spirit.

We think about our faith and develop new ways of making it relevant to our lives. We create ways to make the love of Jesus Christ visible, especially to those in need. St. Matthew’s will gently challenge you to redefine yourself. Growth implies change and movement toward the person you are yet to be.

Membership is open to those who wish to join with other Christians in the worship of God, to be a part of a supportive and ministering fellowship, and to grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ.

Mission Statement

Through the grace of God, St. Matthews United Methodist Church strives to emulate Christ’s love and forgiveness to its members, community and the world through inclusiveness, worship, education, mission and service.

Our History

St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church, located on Rt. 450 adjacent to Bowie Senior High School, was built on 3.23 Acres donated to the Methodist Conference in 1963 by Levitt & Sons.  After meeting at Belair Jr. High School until the new building could be finished, the congregation moved into its new facility in 1965.  Soon the congregation was bursting at the seams with plans to expand.  A new sanctuary was constructed in 1973.  Then a Memorial Education Wing consisting of 6 classrooms was added in 1984, followed by a 3 story addition named the Wesley Wing in 2002.

Our congregation is an inclusive, welcoming band of loving individuals who believe in the goodness and support of each other.  Leaning heavily on the Bible and its teachings, the members reach out in mission to our community and to the world.  There are many different groups operating within the overall structure of the church.  These groups offer almost every kind of participation in worship, youth, seniors, mission support, community and health support.

Our ministers have been a huge contributing aspect of the success of our church in the community.  We have been blessed with dedicated ministers guiding us through the years.  Presently, we are joyfully appreciative of our newest minister, our first woman senior minister, Rev. Ginger Gaines-Cirelli.  With her youthful enthusiasm, she leads us forward and upward into the next decade of change and adventure in faith, ministry, and service to others.
