Eight team
members left Bowie and two from Texas bound for the Mississippi Gulf
Coast in March 2006. Their mission was to aid Katrina/Rita victims
in putting their lives back together. After settling into their
quarters for the week (classrooms on the second floor of the church)
they were briefed by the project coordinator and the next day
Monday, given their work assignments.
Work began on
the home of the Davis family of seven that had suffered severe water
damage from the storms. Most of the physical work was replacing dry
wall.
The second
project they worked was located in Moss Point, a community next to
Pascagoula. This house had sustained roof damage which in turn
caused water damage.
The teams
finished by 1:30pm on Friday and gathered into two Vans heading in
different directions to observe the area. One toured the coastline
to the west and the other headed into Bay St Louis to visit a family
previously assisted in November 2005. What they observed on that
long drive was virtually total destruction of the area three to four
blocks in from the coast line.
They left the
area wondering how and when any of it would be operational again.
